9TH Annual Javarita Coffeehouse Concert Series

The Good Shepherd United Church of Christ is excited to announce an incredible line up of performers and musicians for the upcoming Javarita Coffeehouse Concert Series. The Coffeehouse was founded nine years ago as a way to support and encourage fine acoustic music in the Santa Cruz Valley.  All shows begin at 7:00pm.   Tickets can be purchased at the door for $10.00, or season tickets can be purchased for $60.00 per person.  Any net profits made from the concerts during the year are given to the Green Valley Food Bank.  Contact Randy Mayer at 625-1375 if you have any questions.

  • October 16th – Cadillac Mountain:--- A three-piece bluegrass group that has stripped it down to the basics; just a stand up bass, guitar, banjo and of course, vocal harmonies that would melt an ice cube in the middle of a Kentucky winter.  Considered one of the top bluegrass groups in Southern Arizona you won’t want to miss their show. www.myspace.com/cadillacmountain

  • November 20th – Al Perry and Jim Basnight: Al is like an old-school preacher; timeless voice, stern demeanor, but a twinkle escapes those pale eyes once in a while. He is a Tucson music icon playing folk, country and western and a little rock n roll.  His friend Jim comes to the desert by way of Seattle where he is considered a fixture in the music scene there.  Jim plays some 200 concerts a year with his band but on this night we get to see him stripped down with just an instrument and his good friend Al.  www.myspace.com/alperry   www.jimbasnight.com

  • December 11th --AJ Bodnar and Liza DiSavino: Think of the musical version of the girl from the right side of the tracks who meets the boy from the wrong side: that's Liza DiSavino and A.J. Bodnar. Coming from diverse backrounds, (to say the least!) This versatile duo brings a high-energy, improvisational approach to their duo performances of folk, contradance, jazz, and original music. They come to us by way of Schenevus, New York; they perform world-wide and will dazzle us with their endless talent.  www.vanepig.net

  • January 15th –The Santa Cruz River Band: One of the most celebrated and important bands in Arizona for they create a cultural bridge that lifts up and supports the authentic music, poetry, oral history, and legends of the American Southwest.  Ted Ramirez and Michael Ronstadt have roots in this land that go back 7 or 8 generations so they stand on a firm foundation when they share their love of song and story.  It is quite possible that they will bring a few members of their families and other friendly musicians to the show.  www.santacruzriverband.com

  • February 19th – Lisa Otey and Diane Van Deurzen: A dynamic duo, a perfect blend of hot jazz, sultry blues and a little bit of boogie-woogie just to keep everyone on their toes. They have taken their act all over the Southwest and to festivals, clubs and theatres across Europe.  They are loved wherever they appear especially in the Santa Cruz Valley as they share their critically acclaimed style of music.  Always a sold out show.  www.owlsnestmusic.com

  •  March 19th –Ross Nickerson and Friends:  Ros s let’s no dust gather under his feet nor his lightin’ fast pickin’ fingers.  He is at the top of the bluegrass pile as a well-known and highly sought after banjo extraordinaire and always brings some of the best pickers in business with him.  Every time he plays at the coffeehouse the crowds get bigger and bigger---watch out this year.   www.rossnickerson.com

  • April 16th – Laurie Lewis and Tom Rozum: Legend is not always loud. Particularly in the beneath-the-radar substreams of American folk music and bluegrass, it is bestowed more by whispered word-of-mouth, over years and decades, than by the hurried hype and ballyhoo of the pop mainstream. You can't measure Laurie Lewis's 30-year career with the usual commercial yardsticks. She has won a Grammy and twice been named Female Vocalist of the Year by the International Bluegrass Music Association.  Easily the biggest name we have had at the Coffeehouse, you won’t want to miss this incredible show with her partner Tom Rosum.   www.laurielewis.com
